Aerial view of ancient city ruins of Beit Shemesh and fields of Elah Valley.
Beit Shemesh means “house of the sun” or “temple of the sun” in Hebrew. Modern city inherited the name from the Bronze-Age city, originally named after the Canaanite sun-goddess Shapash, sometimes called Shemes.
The city located in the territorial bounds of the tribe of Judah, on the border with unconquered territory of the tribe of Dan, under the rule of Philistines, and often mentioned in Biblical as a strategic and commercial cross-point of the region.
