The prophet Elijah’s fire-lighting challenge — one of the Old Testament’s most spectacular contests between the God of the Israelites, and a pagan deity — took place on the south-eastern summit of Mount Carmel.
Horn of the Carmel (in Arabic: “Dir el-Muhraka”), the monastery of the “place of burning” is the second largest site on the Carmel ridge.
Muhraka named in reference to the story relayed in the Bible whereby a fire came down from heaven and burnt the prophet Elijah’s offering when he battled the Baal prophets.
