Kissing Stone of Unction. Church of Holy Sepulcher. Old City Jerusalem. C0074-2

The Stone of Unction, also known as the Stone of Anointing, is the place where Christ’ body was laid down after being removed from the crucifix and prepared for burial. He was anointed and wrapped in shrouds as the Jews customarily prepared their dead for burial at the time. The Stone of Unction is a polished red stone and measures six meters in length and one meter wide. It is customary for pilgrims to kiss the stone or rub it with oil and then wipe it with a cloth.
Church of Holy Sepulcher is probably the most visited church complex in Israel. Within the church proper are the last four (or, by some definitions, five) Stations of the Via Dolorosa, representing the final episodes of Jesus’ Passion. This church has enormous religious and emotional effect on visitor’s experience. It’s energy is sensible even though a single picture.
